2024 - Year of anniversaries
2024 provides five occasions at once to celebrate Duisburg's culture: the DKM Museum turns 15, the Küppersmühle Museum turns 25, the Landscape Park turns 30, the Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt turns 50 and the Lehmbruck Museum turns 60.
One year, five cultural spots, five anniversaries, countless highlights
One of Germany's most traditional museums is located in Kant Park in the heart of our city: with its collection, the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum is one of the most important centres for 20th and 21st century sculpture in Europe. In 2024, the museum will look back on over 100 years of success - and on the 60th anniversary of Manfred Lehmbruck's building, which is a monument to his father and a great gift to all art lovers.
It is even more monumental around the disused production sites of steel construction, around the gigantic facilities that caused a worldwide sensation in the Ruhr region and an upswing in Germany. Today, the Landscape Park Duisburg-North has been preserving this industrial heritage for 30 years and ensuring that the former ironworks with its unique park landscape offers plenty of quality of life and recreational fun. We celebrate that!
Relics of the past also inspired the waterfront to make an arc into the present. The former 19th century granary has been welcoming art lovers to Duisburg's inner harbour for 25 years as the MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art. The building, which owes its striking architecture to Herzog & de Meuron, is one of Germany's largest private museums. With the Ströher Collection, it is home to one of the most impressive collections of German art since 1945.
The Museum of Inland Navigation has the most comprehensive collection of shipping history. In the former Ruhrort bathing establishment, a charming historicist building with Art Nouveau elements, everything has revolved around the means of transport on the water for 50 years. The three-storey multimedia tour is suitable for adults and children alike. Detailed models and hands-on exhibits illustrate the technical aspects of shipping, as well as the everyday lives of skippers and their families.
Five areas united: for 15 years now, the DKM Museum's collection has focussed on making contemporary art from the 1960s onwards, ancient and modern art from the Orient to the Far East, art from ancient Egypt, vessels from 5,000 years of cultural history and classical and contemporary photography accessible to the public.
Various special exhibitions and highlights are planned throughout the year to mark the five anniversaries. The Lehmbruck Museum will be showing the special exhibition "Courage - Lehmbruck and the Avant-garde" from 15 June, the Landscape Park will be celebrating ExtraSchicht in a particularly big way on 1 June, and the presentation of the "Haniel Collection" will be on display in the Küppersmühle until 5 May.
