filmforum Duisburg
Municipal cinema and the city of Duisburg’s historical film collection.
Germany’s first municipal cinema
The filmforum in Duisburg is Germany’s first municipal cinema. Its extraordinary atmosphere is reminiscent of a 1950s picture house. The latest cinema art, classics and real rarities feature in its multi-award-winning programme, 70 percent of which is made up of European films. Rarely screened films from South America, Asia and Africa can also be seen. US productions are also shown on our screens, although they are mostly different to those shown in multiplexes.
Founded under the patronage of the Volkshochschule Duisburg, it has been committed to working on film-related subjects of cultural relevance and drawing up educational media programmes since 1959 and has been organising cultural film events ever since. In 2003 the Volkshochschule became an independent GmbH, whose film events are attended by more than 100,000 people every year. Its tasks include maintaining two historical film archives, producing and distributing historical city-related documentation, running two cinemas in Duisburg city centre and organising a summer film event in the Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord.
