Diverse cultural and natural spaces across 1,200 kilometres

The Rhine has always been able to wield its magical powers of attraction over people. Its many castles are legendary and its wine region is much vaunted. Yet from its source in the Swiss Alps to its estuary in Rotterdam, the Rhine meanders through more than 1,200 kilometres of highly diverse cultural and natural spaces. The RheinRadWeg runs parallel to the river on both banks, with well-constructed and cycle-friendly routes.

Cyclists will find an especially attractive part of the RheinRadWeg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The popular cycle route in Germany’s most populous federal state is vibrant and rich in contrast. Historical town centres alternate with the metropolitan ambience of cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg. The vibrant city of Duisburg is fascinating with its huge port and monuments to industrial culture, but idyllic dykes and riverside meadows can also be found along the route.

Duisburg is also a cycling hub in many respects. This is where the RheinRadWeg changes into the characteristic landscape of the Lower Rhine and other key cycle routes intersect or start here, including the NiederRheinroute and the RuhrtalRadweg.
