Duisburg Zoo

With around one million visitors every year, Duisburg Zoo is among the best known and most frequently visited zoological gardens in Germany.

A zoo and more besides

A visit to the zoo is always an experience for children and adults alike. Duisburg Zoo is a pretty special place. Where else is it possible to see the cute koalas? More than 5,000 animals from all over the world live here. But Duisburg Zoo is not just a home for animals. It is also a wonderful leisure park with plenty of green spaces for the whole family. In addition to the petting zoo, there are play areas, a pirate ship and a low ropes course. With so many exciting experiences, visitors barely notice how time flies. And when they get a little peckish, there are plenty of places where they can top up their energy levels. Various refreshment stands and beer gardens are located throughout the site.

Species conservation

Species conservation is at the top of the list of tasks for modern zoological gardens. Duisburg Zoo is involved in preserving the endangered animal kingdom on a number of levels – whether in the form of a bat station at the zoo, lessons at Duisburg primary schools, regional projects or as a partner to conservation organisations all over the world.

Outdoor areas and spacious enclosures ensure that the residents of the zoo are as comfortable as possible. Duisburg’s well-being programme for the koalas has attracted plenty of attention around the world. A breeding programme here has proved successful for the first time. Koala breeding for the whole of Europe is now coordinated at Duisburg Zoo.

Events and activities for children and families

There are always special events and activities happening here. Bookings are taken for the exciting ‘Family Night Safari’ between October and March. The ‘Nordic Evening’ takes visitors to see the inhabitants of the tundra und taiga. Between March and October there is face painting for the younger visitors on Sundays and public holidays. Depending on their favourite animal, they can then be transformed into a lion or butterfly, for example.
