Sechs-Seen-Platte / Sportpark Duisburg

There is plenty of space to enjoy the water in the great outdoors! ‘Sechs Seen’ (or ‘Six Lakes’) is the name given to Duisburg’s lake region. In addition, there is the Regatta Course, the Parallelkanal and three further lakes in the adjacent Sportpark. Wolfsee lido with its fine sandy beach and the waterskiing facilities on Margaretensee are especially popular. Those who are drawn to the middle of the water can hire pedaloes, dragon boats, surfboards, sailboats and canoes.

For families with children there is an especially delightful place to go, which is also free: Wedau Water Park. Everyone can splash away to their heart’s content here! There is a pirate ship stranded in the sand as well as a water and sand play area, scramble net, wicker huts, waterfall, raft ferry, rope path and various slides.

Breathe freely and recharge the batteries! Wonderful paths along the water’s edge between the forests and lakes help visitors to forget the daily grind. In the summer, sunbathing lawns and barbecue areas are perfect places to enjoy the weekend. Walkers, joggers and cyclists feel equally at home here. Yet it is seldom overcrowded. The view from the lookout tower by Wolfssee is highly recommended. The high ropes course set amid the trees by the Parallelkanal offers an intensive natural experience. There is also a course for children there.

Incidentally, the recreational area is not only worth visiting in the summer. The different seasons of the year present a fascinating and impressive show of light and colours.

The Regattabahn is a sporting venue of world renown. International competitions have been held here since 1935. The place where MSV Duisburg play their home games should also be familiar to many people – the adjoining football stadium, which is now named after their sponsor schauinsland-reisen. Sportpark Duisburg is the headquarters of the sports association for North-Rhine Westphalia and is home to numerous clubs and associations. National and state training centres for approximately 25 different sports are also located here. There are facilities for football, swimming, speed skating, basketball, athletics and ice skating. The floodlit five-kilometre running track alongside the Regattabahn is very popular with joggers.

In 1919, the company Krupp gave its gravel excavation site in Neudorf/Wedau to the city of Duisburg with the instruction to create a sports and recreational area for the local population. This led to the creation of Germany’s biggest and most diverse sports and recreation park on an area now covering some 200 hectares.

In 1962, the city of Duisburg bought the adjacent site on which two lakes had been created as a result of gravel excavation and two further lakes were on the verge of completion. The Sechs-Seen-Platte project was completed in 2001 when work ended on the Haubachsee as a conservation area.
